The
building comprises five laboratories - physics,
chemistry, biology and two general science labs - together
with a tutorial room and an office for the head of science. The
physics lab has an associated dark room; the biology lab has
a greenhouse and a demonstration/display area for longer-term
experiments. There is also an external artificial pond and
waterfall for the biologists.
Its layout represents some major innovations in the way
science was taught at St. Mary's, arising from detailed
design development with the teaching staff. Complete
experimental apparatus for a whole form can be prepared
in the large shared (and interlinked) prep rooms and
wheeled into the labs on trollies. Fixed benches are
largely replaced by mobile tables, purpose-designed to
fit in a number of ways around fixed service pods, and
sized to allow safe separation between practical work
and note-taking.
